What is an undercut?
The sides and back are clipped to a single short length — no taper, no fade — and the top is left long and disconnected from them. Seen from the side there is a visible step where the two meet. It is the most graphic men’s haircut in regular use.
Undercut or fade — which do I want?
Ask for a fade if you want the sides to flow into the top, and an undercut if you want them to stay separate. An undercut is bolder and grows out faster into an awkward stage, which is worth knowing before you commit.
What can I do with the top?
Slick it back, wear it in a quiff, tie it up, or leave it loose and textured. The disconnected sides mean the top can change completely without recutting — one of the reasons it stays popular.
